For your situation, you will not be able to install ANY Exchange 2003 servers until your Exchange 2000 Front-end server is upgraded to Exchange 2003.

Your reply didn't indicate whether this was the case. When you run Exchange 2003 setup, it will detect if you have existing 2000 FE servers and will not let you proceed (at least this is supposed to be what happens). This ONLY applies to FE servers though. You can have as many 2000 Mailbox servers (Back-end) as you want. You do however need to upgrade your schema in prep for E2003.
