And it is correct that more parallelism speeds up backups (with modern, fast tape drives, anyway). Parallelism does lengthen restore times. If you are backing up 4 save-sets in parallel, and you want to restore one of those save-sets, it takes 4 times longer because 3/4 of the data read from the tape belongs to the 3 save-sets you aren't interested in[1]. It is a trade-off between backup time and restore time. However, "de-muxing" the data stream does not shoe-shine the drives. Legato simply starts streaming the data off the drive and discards any unneeded data chunks. We're on Backup Exec now (different job) and it works OK too. Both have their quirks and flaws, but both will perform adequate backups and restores. I don't do brick-level backups, though.
