"shoe-shine" - that's the term CommVault guys mentioned a few times when
talking about competitor products. :)

My great-grandpappy gave me this great bit of advice:

"Know how to tell when a salesman is lying? Watch his lips - if they are
moving, he's lying!"

You can control the amount of parallelism in Legato (at a couple of
different levels). And it is correct that more parallelism speeds up backups
(with modern, fast tape drives, anyway). Parallelism does lengthen restore
times. If you are backing up 4 save-sets in parallel, and you want to
restore one of those save-sets, it takes 4 times longer because 3/4 of the
data read from the tape belongs to the 3 save-sets you aren't interested
in[1]. It is a trade-off between backup time and restore time.

However, "de-muxing" the data stream does not shoe-shine the drives. Legato
simply starts streaming the data off the drive and discards any unneeded
data chunks.

[1] I *think* Legato is smart enough to tell the tape drive to fast-forward
past the unneeded data if the drive supports that sort of thing.

Legato can do a backup at the speed of the media if you use multiplexing, in
other words if you backup multiple servers at once onto the same tape. This
way data is written onto the tape very fast. However I question the speed of
the restore process - if you need to restore just one server, the stream of
data on tape will have to be de-muxed. The guys from CommVault told me that
this would result in a lot of back-and-forth tape rewind operations. The
CommVault guys of course were promoting their way of doing things (Galaxy),
which according to them is more restore friendly than anything else out
there.

We were using backup exec for many years successfully. We now purchased
Legato Networker for a more "corporate" back up solution. The boys at Legato
tell us that have broken every speed record. I will believe it when I see
it.

I used Arcserve for years with Exch 5.5 and it worked fine for me. We're on
Backup Exec now (different job) and it works OK too. Both have their quirks
and flaws, but both will perform adequate backups and restores. I don't do
brick-level backups, though. Not really recommended... I think it's a
personal preference, really, although I haven't seen Arcserve for about 18
months, so I don't know what the latest iteration is like...
