To clarify, you're talking about Outlook contact lists. It's an Outlook limitation. Just break the list in half (say, A-L and M-Z) and make one list that contains the two halves, okay?
Still, huge contact lists, even if segmented as I suggested, are a bad idea because they always get expanded in the message header making even tiny messages become large.
