My understanding is that unless they're using VSS with Exchange 2003 that
snapshot backups are unsupported by Microsoft. In the past, many SAN
vendors would tout that they could snap Exchange, but I remain skeptical
that you can reliably restore from it.

I recommend that unless you have a supported solution, you run a standard
backup to a SAN disk and take a snapshot of the backup file.

Subject: Snapshot backup technology

I am curious about opinions and usefulness of snapshot type backups related
to Exchange.

We have a Hitachi SAN and purchased QuickShadow which does snapshot backups.

My first area of concern is that this does file level backup and it is not
Exchange aware. It seems to me that in the event of a corrupt database the
snapshot is of no use at all. I'm actually having difficulty coming up with
a situation where that data is useful.

My second thought is that we can't even use snapshots to backup to tape
because it would not be an Exchange aware backup thus our log files would
never get truncated. I will have to do on-line Exchange backups in addition
to the snapshot backup.

Am I way off on my thinking here?
