Yeah, I didn't think about that...It just gets better all the time
doesn't it.....:-)
Maybe I can restore each months backup to it's own mailbox store.
This way I would have 6 IS on one server. I think I would need about
120g of space to do it. Then I can give the users who need access full
rights to the store.

You might have to produce multiple PSTs for each user since a PST is
limited
to 2GB.

That I understand.
But those you didn't purge their deleted items will that email still be
available after the restore?

I just let me IT manager know some of the expectations.
He is on my side, so I will attempt to recover as much as I can and see
what
happens. If the mail was purged then they aren't getting it back.

My plan is to restore each store for each month then exmerge all the
mail to
.pst files and allow whoever wants to see it have access it. When it is
said
and done I will have restored 480 mailboxes.

I will do my best.

Thanks

Vincent... What Ed is saying is this: If the person in question had
the
knowledge on how to purge their deleted items, then the purged items
will be
gone and even deleted item retention won't help. At that point the only
way
to recover them would possibly be with a third party D/R tool, though
even
that's no guarantee.

I guess my thought that was since I have Exchange setup to use the No
Recovery method and my retention level is set to 30 days which means to
me
that the mail can be recovered up to 30 days. I think the term retention
got
thrown in there and I meant to say the recovered deleted items setting.
Anyway isn't the 30 days recovery part of the backup set?

Define "retention". Remember, you're going backward in time, not
forward.

Well then that is all I have to work with. I will try and restore the
mail
from the day of the backup. I guess I thought the backups would have the
retention.

I am running Exchange 2000 SP3

My point is that you can't. For example, a user gets a message during
the
day and then deletes it. Save for deleted retained items, no backup
will
have it. Backup tapes represent a point in time, not a range of dates.

I am to recover email from Jan 04-June04.
I have to verify that it is for all users our just a few.
Is that clear or am I still being to vague?

The term "6 months' mail" has to be defined by the requestor.

Subject: Recovering 6 months of mail

Hey All,
I haven't posted in a while (not that I did much before). We have a few
less
people now so the administration has gone quite a bit, until now.

I was asked to restore 6 months of email for pretty much all of our
users
(80).
Now based on the lists advice a while ago, I do have my full IS backups.
No
brick levels. This is a first for me so can you some give some advice? I
have the MS stuff I have been looking through.
My biggest concern is that they need to have ALL the mail. So if I
restore
the store from Jan, then how do I restore it from Feb? Will I have 6
different IS? One for each month?
This machine does not have to be in production. I just need to let
management peruse through the mail. The restore is a bit different then
the
ones I have looked at so far.

Anyway thanks for help back then, and now.
