There is a trade-off. A little study I did some time ago showed that a
30-day deleted item recovery roughly doubled the size of the store, 60-day
tripled it and 90-day quadrupled it.

There are some serious lessons to learn here. Two of which are Deleted Item
Retention rules. Minimum 30 day retention IMO.
Proper mailbox size management is crucial. If you cant have that, then you
need to plan ahead for how you will recover them. Or not.

If both of those had been in place, then this issue would have been quickly
solved.

That said, hindsight is always 20/20

I'd have told the user it can't be done. I hope he got the user's cost
center number and is charging it.

Then I would go with the date range exmerge.

You mean insert the name of the subfolder in the inbox? We tried the inbox,
that's what is 3.8GB!!!

Sure, just run Exmerge for a specific date range or to recover a specific
folder (Inbox in this case).

Cheers.

Importance: High

Hey Guys,

Have the following scenario......

Have a user that deleted some crucial inbox folders on her mailbox, and of
course now direly needs them back. Running e2k3 on win2k server. We only
do store level backups, and not brick-level. So here's the deal.
We've built an entirely new server as our recovery server for doing mailbox
recoveries. It's all setup to go, restored the store in question, no
issues. Problem is that the user's inbox alone is 3.8 GB!!!!! Of course I
can't run exmerge because it's too freagin huge!!!
So, anyone know of another method using an exchange backup server that I can
connect a client to the store in question, access the mailbox, and recover
the inbox folders she needs?

Thanks,

Paul
