You might be able to get RPC over HTTP to work, but my personal experience is that it's flaky. That could have been my own employer's particular environment, but it took a long time to connect, and tended to want to reconnect periodically. Your users will likely be much happier using a VPN until this technology is more mature. On the other hand, your experience may be better if you choose to try it. You don't have to consider these suggestions to be mutually exclusive--try both.
