If you aren't using a frontend server then both Exchange servers need to
be accessible from the Internet with their own FQDN. The first Exchange
server will then redirect you to the second server (and vice versa if
you connect to the second server first).
The proxy-ing (is that a word?) of OWA to multiple servers via a single
entry point is one of the main functions of a frontend / backend
scenario.

Subject: Exch 2000 to 2003 migration

Ok, I am back at my Exch 2000 to 2003 migration. Hopefully this time I
can do a better job of explaining where I am at and where I am going.

1500 users 3/4's of whom use OWA only. So the migration from 2K OWA to
2003 OWA must happen in phases.

Started with a single server on a W2K DC (I inherited that), the domain
is in mixed 2K3/2000 mode.
>From the outside world we hit the mail server via
OWA2000server.elyriaschools.org. The 2K3 domain name is ecsdnet.local.

Brought up Exchange 2003 on a second server on Windows 2K3 in the site.
Neither is set up for front end/ back end as far as I can tell. Moved my
mailbox. Outlook found it no problem and when I hit OWA from inside the
building I get the new 2003 OWA. The initial hit is to the 2000
webserver, it redirects me to the new 2003 Exchange server no problem.

The problem is that when hitting it from outside the building I go to
OWA2000server.elyriaschools.org it hits the Exch 2000 server, then I
enter my username and password and it redirects me to the new 2003
server.

Unfortunately it redirects me to the actual internal fqdn
mail2.ecsdnet.local

Of course while outside the web browser can not resolve that. I can put
up mail2.elyriaschools.org in DNS and map it through our internet
connection but how do I get the old 2000 server to do the redirect to
that address?

I thought I had found the answer here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=871013 Which has you change the
ncacn_ip_tcp value, but no luck.

Any ideas, or have I gone about this the wrong way? Backing out and
starting over is not really a problem.
