1224 is over 1024, right? Was 1224 the port that MAPI just happened to be using at the time? There's a KB article that tells you how to lock down MAPI to use a single port for all sessions rather than dynamically allocating them. Perhaps another admin did this lockdown. In any case, the advice to use a VPN is something you should apply.
