Did you purchase the exchange agent when you bought the software? It is an additional cost and you may have been running on a 90 eval and 27 dec could of been the expiry date.

You might try running a backup with NTBACKUP and see if it flushes the logs. This is my setup; Exchange 2003 gets backed up by veritas with the FULL-database and logs (flush committed logs) to a NAS device, The NAS then gets backed up by veritas also to the TAPE.
