You've asked what I call a "consulting engagement" question. Your question
is by necessity deficient in the amount of detail any of us would need to
assess your plan. If you were to supply enough detail, it would take any of
us more time to assess your plan than any of us is prepared to devote.
Therefore, I recommend you contract with a consultant to review your plan
and to suggest improvements.

Subject: Exchange server move

I have a domain (I'll call it domain A) that I am winding down over the next
several months. As part of the process, I plan on shutting down my Exchange
servers (Exchange 2000 in a Win2K domain) on March 31. I have a subset of
users that will be moving to a separate domain (domain B) when that domain
becomes active in June. They will be on a new Exchange 2003 server that will
wind up in a Server 2003 native domain at that time.
What I would like to do is:

1) Build a new Exchange 2003 server and bring it in to the existing W2K
domain.
2) Move the subset of user that will move to domain B to the new Ex2K3
server.
3) On March 31, spin down the old mail servers and point my firewall to the
new Exchange server.
4) When domain B is ready, move the 2K3 Exchange server to the new domain,
rerun the Exchange install to add the Exchange attributes to AD
in domain B, and then remove domain A from service.

Any thoughts on this process? Am I missing something?

Thanks,
