Then it seems you have an excellent case for folks manually backing up
their Exchange data before syncing a new device. I do it, and teach my
clients to do it, also. Even just exporting everything in the mailbox to
a local backup.pst file is often enough insurance to guard against
temporary data loss.

Since I got my new Smartphone (mentioned in another thread here), I've
lost all my Outlook notes, a few contacts and appointments, gotten
duplicates of everything, had old completed tasks show up as not
completed, etc. Being able to blow away the whole mess and re-import it
all again has been very helpful.

But, in your case of course, the horse has already left the barn, so to
speak, so locking the gate now is kinda too little too late. Might be
time to restore to recovery storage group and extract mailbox data.
Especially if you charge extra $$ for such restores.
