Thanks, Erick.

Not to try to bait you or anyone else, but I intentionally left that
tidbit out to see if that was my issue based on others' personal
experiences. I do have SAV4.52 running on the server and just the last
3 weeks or so I've had these complaints coming in. I think Symantec is
the right place to call first since administration will *not* allow me
to remove the AV protection. Thanks for your pointer.

Barry

Do you have any AV running on the box?

I had this problem as well, and I believe the problem was with Symantec
AV for Exchange. I removed that, and haven't seen the problem since. Of
course, it's not an easy problem to see, but I haven't had any
complaints.

Subject: message categorizer problem

Windows 2000 SP4 W/Exchange 2000 SP3 and current patches and rollup.

Several users have complained this last week about not receiving certain
e-mails from random individuals. An initial investigation has verified
this event as I will describe:

User surfs out to the local ISP to check their home mail account and
forwards a message to their account here and it never arrives. No NDR.
User's ISP is not blocked or filtered. User sends the same message to
herself, our local tech and myself. Local tech receives the message,
user and myself do not. After receiving numerous complaints, it appears
the situation worsens and is not necessarily random but is spreading.

Using ESM tools, I see the message in question using message tracking
and details show:

SMTP: Message submitted to advance queuing
SMTP: Started message submission to advanced queue
SMTP: Message submitted to categorizer

The next line *should* be:

SMTP Store Driver: Message delivered locally to store to recipient's
name but that ain't happenin'.

Why are the messages not making it through the categorizer or what is
causing the holdup? There is not a current session or an SMTP queue for
the domain sending the message I've been tracking today and those from
last week. Nothing in the event logs after turning up the MTA
reporting. I've searched TechNet and Microsoft's support site with no
relief and am planning to call PSS but thought I'd toss the situation
out to the group.

Thanks for any insights.

Barry
