Backup to disk (to save having to try to move your tape drive, etc.). Build a new environment in VMWare[1] in your lab which mirrors your production environment and then restore the backups to that environment. Once you have these VMs in place you can use them on a regular basis to test backups by copying/restoring them to the VM images and verifying they mount and then performing whatever tests you'd like against the mounted databases.
It may not be the fastest environment in which to test, but it should be sufficient to achieve the desired objectives of your duck.
