Check the membership using Outlook, and you should see it with no
problem. I knew I had heard about this issue before, and that it was by
design, but it took me awhile to find a reference for it.

Read below:

Universal distribution groups (UDG)

Universal groups behave most like Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
distribution lists. Universal groups have the following attributes:

*
Universal groups in a native-mode domain can contain user accounts from
any domain, global groups from any domain, and universal groups from any
domain in the forest.

*
Universal groups of the security type, named universal security groups
(USGs), can be used only in native-mode domains. Universal groups of the
distribution type, named universal distribution groups (UDGs), can be
used in mixed-mode and in native-mode domains.

*
Outlook users in any domain can view full membership of the
distribution group.

*
Membership is not retrieved from remote domain controllers.

*
Membership modifications incur replication to the global catalog
servers.

The key here is that "Membership is NOT retrieved from remote domain
controllers". So in ADUC you're not going to see the proper membership
by design. Instead, Exchange relies on the GC in the domain that holds
the UDG for proper membership for DL expansion.

Use Outlook in the other domain's to view membership and you should see
everything properly.

This is a great article that explains what you are seeing.

Sounds like an issue related to the backlink property on the user
object, and yes, could be a GC issue.

Rebuilding the RUS won't change how something shows up in ADUC.

figured out some aspect of this ....

turns out although we can't see that the user is a member of the group
(from the user's properties), they are receiving mail (all that really
matters)

 thanks for the suggestion ...

Subject: Universal DL's not replicating

our active directory forest, which is comprised of multiple domains (7),
is in the process of being migrated from windows 2000 native to windows
2003 by our AD guys ...

everything seems to be going well (replication, roles, etc) ... except
universal distribution groups are not being replicated for cross domain
members ... and these users are not receiving email when it is being
sent to the group ...

more specifically ...

John is in DomainA, but is a member of a UDL called EmailGroup which is
housed in DomainB ....

you can see Johns name in the properties of the EmailGroup members tab
in ADUC ...
you can see the EmailGroup name in the Outlook Propeties of John under
the "member of" tab ...
you CAN NOT see the EmailGroup name in Johns ADUC properties, "member
of" tab ...

we think it is a replication issue with the Global Catalog but are not
seeing any errors ... I have already have rebuilt all my RUS entries,
and waited a day, but still no change ....

any ideas?

thanks
