Thanks for your reply, Chris. The originator of the message is on Exchange 2003. The recipient who forwarded the message is on Exchange 5.5. Both Exchange servers are internal, but they do not know about one another yet - the servers are in different sites, no connectors between the sites, and no ADC connections to the Exchange 5.5 computer - so the message went through my VMS email gateway, which uses SMTP, not MAPI. Hope this helps. It's sort of a puzzle.
