Larry, I can't speak to getting to OWA in a different domain, but I do consulting work for some local non-profits and was wondering if you had taken a look at http://www.techsoup.com/ to see if you qualify. If you do, well then you can get software for next to nothing. Just as an FYI ISA Std = $60.50. They have some funny purchasing rules, but it has saved a couple of my contracts $$$$. It might be worth looking into.

I have a test account on the server, and from the inside, I can type the server name in a browser, and the mailbox comes up in OWA just fine.
