I don't make that recommendation to everyone, just those who seem overwhelmed.

Sent: Friday, July 08, 2005 6:39 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Upgrading Ex 5.5 options Wouldn't we all like to hire consultants? I sure would, often. I'm very lazy. But working for myself and now for a private, non-profit makes it rather tough to do so, there isn't a whole lot of extra money available. Hiring consultants is way too often hit-or-miss, anyway, with a huge cost no matter what the result. I have upgraded servers and systems from NT4 to Win2K and from there to Server 03 several times. Also Exch 5.5 to Exch 03. It hasn't been that tough. Keep in mind, all the companies I did this for had only plus or minus 100 users. Win98SE still works, although I don't have any more of those clients myself. For an NT4 to Win2K upgrade, I built a new, strong box as an NT4 BDC, and then uplifted it to PDC. Then I just put in the Win2K server disk and followed directions. I never did it but I assume you could put in an 03 server CD and do the upgrade from NT4 just as well if not more easily. If the upgrade would have failed, I would have taken it offline, killed it, and made one of the other BDCs into the PDC. But it always worked fine. After upgrading the PDC, I did the same to the other BDCs, then to all the rest of the servers. I believe the same goes for Server 03. I have only done the server upgrade from NT4 to Win2K or from Win2K to Server 03. With Exchange 5.5 on a Win2K server (no other NT4 boxes on the network), I simply built a new 03 server, put Exchange 03 on the new server, making sure it knew about the 5.5 server, and followed directions. This is how I remember it, but it's been a year since I needed to do this, and I am old, losing brain cells with every breath. But I took my time, using much patience, and kept the Microsoft 800 number and a credit card near at hand (Microsoft is the one consultant, now sub-contracted out, I know, that I have used several times over the years, always with a problem solved, although one time it did take 20 hours). I would do my upgrades, usually over a three-day weekend, only after I had two for-sure-good tape backups as well as all the data backed up to a standalone server. So far, knock on my noggin, I have not lost a system or any data. Having said that, all will fall down around my ears today, eh? YMMV... -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ed Crowley [MVP] Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2005 8:41 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Upgrading Ex 5.5 options You really ought to hire a consultant. I've been told to create a "wishlist" and obviously this would be on that wishlist. We are currently using an NT domain here. No AD in use at all. Knowing next to nothing about AD I'd rather stick with NT domain if possible. Can EX 2K/2K3 work in an NT domain? Can someone point me to a FAQ regarding the system requirements?
