How often do users create mapi profiles? In most organizations it is less than 1/year. So who cares what they have to put in. Better yet, automate the process of profile creation and completely remove the need for them to know anything.
Make sure the OWA name is easy, or is linked from an easy to get to page. You could look at what GC the Outlook clients are resolving against - that might affect whether check-names worked correctly if the users don't have rights to query the GC that Exchange handed out. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rappaport, Howard M Sent: Monday, August 08, 2005 8:48 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Front-end / back-end mailbox resolution So this weekend we did a server consolidation, and I'd also like to be able to do a name consolidation on what info we give our users. We used to have: server1.rootdomain.com and server2.rootdomain.com which were aliases to server1.forest.rootdomain.com and server2.childdomain.forest.rootdomain.com and now have a clustered back-end of cluster.forest.rootdomain.com and NLB'd front-end of friendlyservername.rootdomain.com. I have 3 servers listed in my ESM (frontendserver1 frontendserver2 and clusteredserver). rootdomain.com is a unix dns controlled environment. friendlyservername.rootdomain.com has no entry in AD. Everyone happily goes to http://friendlyservername.rootdomain.com for OWA, and I'd like people to be able to put in friendlyservername.rootdomain.com into outlook to setup their profiles ... But of course I get the "Outlook could not log on. Check to make sure that you are connected to the network and are using the proper server and mailbox name. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action." If I put in cluster.forest.rootdomain.com everything works fine, but damnit I don't wanna do that. This has to be possible; what have I done wrong?
