Finally got it figured out. The SMTP server was only showing the host name
(mmc-mail). I configured it as mmc-mail.mmcwm.com and mail finally got through.
What I found interesting though, was that even though I had stopped/restarted
the SMTP virtual server, it still took a few minutes before it worked. (Aftere
restarting, I sent a message out which got rejected. About 10 minutes later, I
tried again and that one went through.)

You should begin every post and subject line with "Friggin' Lyris" and you
won't have any problems.

Contact the correspondent's postmaster to try to find out what kind of
filtering they're doing. The message you've received indicates that they
might be doing some thing like reverse DNS checking. Do you have a proper
PTR record for your domain?

Subject: can't send to a company

Exchange 200 server

We are having trouble delivering to two different companies. The error I am
getting is:

<mmc-mail #5.5.0 smtp;504 <mmc-mail>: Helo command
rejected: need fully-qualified hostname>

Yet, we have no problem delivering, for example the Exchange Discussion
list, and almost everybody else.

I assume this is an attempt by these companies at spam control but I don't
know the solution to the problem.

Our DNS is hosted by our ISP.

Can someone suggest a simple or even not-so-simple solution to my dilemma?

PS Boy, that Lyris sure is stringent about subject lines. It rejected 2 of
my posts due to the subject line.
