I missed the part where you installed a certificate.

Conversation: EXCHANGE BACK-END FRONT-END SETUP
Subject: RE: EXCHANGE BACK-END FRONT-END SETUP

OK Guys,

Let me see if I have this right?
- Running windows 2003 svr w/ exchange 2003 svr. As front-end server
(webmail)
- Running windows 2003 svr w/ exchange 2003 svr. As Back-End server.
(exchange)
- Have enabled webmail server as front-end server. Stopped store
services.
- Enabled basic authentication on front-end server, and added value \
so this way users don't have to add the domain name when logging on.
- FE server is behind firewall with BE server.
- If I type in http://webmail.ad.papistas.gr/exchange I get pop-up for
username & password. This is great, now I can see my mailbox.
- Now the tricky stuff I think.....I tried adding SSL, and no luck.
When I try to open the link it says I need to add https:// in front of
url to access mailbox. Tried and not accessible. Am I missing
something? I ran the configs from top to bottom, and all seems in
place.
- Also need some good direction for next steps to follow. For example,
If an external client tries to access their OWA mail from the internet,
can I have my front-end server as
http://webmail.ad.papistas.gr/exchange, and a DNS entry on my ISP's DNS
server as http://webmail.papistas.gr that will redirect to
http://webmail.ad.papistas.gr/exchange ? Someone told me to just create
another HTTP virtual server, I tried, but was getting all kinds of
errors that the IP I assigned was already in use by another virtual
server.

Thanks

Just your opinion, but a very valid and well-stated one.

Exactly. ISA is not needed, just highly recommended by a lot of list
members. I don't use it myself, so I know you can make it work with any
number or security solutions on the front-end. I would still try to stay
away from putting the FE server in the DMZ if at all possible. Opening
the
necessary ports between FE and BE servers will cause your firewall to
end up
looking like it had a shotgun taken to it. Neither fun or easy to setup
up
originally, or troubleshoot down the road. Just my opinion though.

ISA makes publishing OWA, POP and IMAP easy. It will also handle the
forms-based authentication itself if you want it to. However other web
publishing appliances can work well, so if you have one, It's not a bad
idea
to try to make it work before buying ISA.

Thanks....so majority thinks running FE with BE in the internal network?
Running exchange 2003, but not using ISA. Running a Symantec 5420
integrated security appliance. Benefits with ISA? I'm assuming it can
handle authentications and more?

You don't mention which version of Exchange you are running, but
assuming it
is 2003 you really should read the Front-End and Back-End Topology
document
here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/library/defau
lt.mspx
You also don't mention whether you are using ISA in the setup. I believe
that you will find that the consensus from this list is to place your FE
server on your internal LAN with the BE server and use ISA as the
firewall.

Hey Guys,....

I'm installing an exchange front-end server to run OWA, & OMA.....

Just out of curiosity....should the server be joined to the domain? If I
do
name him, any good ideas on what schema I should follow? Front-End
server
will sit outside my lan, in the DMZ. Also, I'm planning on installing
SSL &
using certificates...should I install the certificates on the front-end
server?

Thanks a million....
