Outlook tends to be sticky on public folder servers. The real way to test
this is to remove the replicas from the old server so that Outlook will try
the new one. You see, Outlook still thinks that there are replicas on the
old server, and keeps trying it, but it's down so it times out.

Subject: RE: Removing 1st Exchange 2003 Server

OK, so now I am feeling rather stupid....
Setup replication last night for both the forms, and the Schedule+ Free Busy
system folders. When I left I checked the details via my desktop and it
said In Sync by both servers. This morning it said the same thing, so I
turned off SrvA. All seemed well, I even got a message, but I noticed that
my OL2K3 client was saying trying to connect, and it wouldn't. I rebooted
my system and this problem went away. The only thing on this computer that
is different from the others I checked is that I am running active sync for
my Axim. After getting back into my system, all seemed well, was sending
and Receiving and getting confirmations and read receipts as normal. Then
the fun begins...
About 30 min. later I get a call saying that all the calendar information is
missing, and sure enough I try to make an appointment and bang, I get the
//////////////////////// across all scheduling information for about 95% of
our users. So I do the smart thing and turn SrvA back on. Now I am
getting:
>From Server A:
SrvA In Sync
SrvB Both Modified 9/21/2005 12:01 PM
>From Server B:
SrvA Local Modified 9/21/2005 12:04 PM
SrvB In Sync

FYI, I am getting rid of SrvA, and it was the 1st 2K3 server in our site, we
migrated from 5.5 to that system, now I have moved all the users, and PF's
to SrvB and want to get rid of the 1st server.
The only thing I didn't do per KB922931 was kill the replication from SrvA,
I just turned it off to see what would happen. Now I am a little more than
gun shy to break the replication from SrvA, and based upon what Ed said last
night about the status message. What I don't want is to break the
replication, and bang have all the free/busy information go away from
everyone.

Any thoughts?
Thanks
Jeff

Thanks again. I guess the only way to test it now is to turn off the server
and see what happens!

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but nobody I've discussed this with
thinks those replication status flags are reliable. Still, I'd feel
confident that based upon your observations things look okay.

Thanks Ed, just one of those things that makes me go hmmmm.
I have setup the replication for the other 3 and set them to always, and
urgent. So my last question on this subject is under details, they all
say:
Srv1 In Sync
Srv2 In Sync

But none of them have a Last Received Time. On my other public folders I
didn't really look at them as we have been replicating them for a few months
now, but on these...... Am I ok if the status says In Sync, even if there
is no Last Received Time?
Thanks again.

Neither OWAScratchPad nor StoreEvents need to be replicated. Don't worry
about them. The key system folders are the Schedule+ Free/Busy,
Organizational Forms, and Offline Address Book folders--not the roots, but
the child folders underneath them.

I have ran through KB822931 and followed all the directions for removing the
first server. I have found the system folders for OWAScratchPad and for
StoreEvents. In my little mind, that's not working so well on Monday
anyway, I think that there is suppose to be one of these for each server.
If I am correct we should have 3 of each, however we have 5 of each. I can
find the 3 that we should have by looking in the replication tab and seeing
who the folder is residing on, we have 1st
2K3 server, 2nd 2K3 server, and the FE 2K3 server for OWA. So what's up
with the other 2? Could they be left over from the two 5.5 servers we took
out?
Anything else I should be aware of? I am planning on turning off the server
for a week before we do anything else. How many actually remove exchange
from the server?
Thanks
Jeff
