I re-opened a case with MS on this issue. The tech made the following changes:
1) Disabled EDNS Probes on my AD DNS servers using the following command: dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0 (dnscmd.exe is part of support tools off the 20003 CD) 2) Restarted AD DNS service and ran ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /registerdns 3) Removed the servers specified for external DNS on the advanced tab of my SMTP Virtual Server 4) Restarted SMTP Virtual Server 5) Enable Maximum Diagnostic logging for MSExchangeTransport (to be able to gain further info then previously if necessary) I was able to send an e-mail to a domain I could not yesterday. It will take a few days (maybe weeks) until I personally see the error, or get feedback that it is still occuring. If I still have the problem, I will re-open the case with MS and press onward. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, September 23, 2005 11:18 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: SMTP errors Thanks for the reply. I am glad that I am not alone. I have nothing in the IIS SMTP logs that indicates an error. I turned up SMTP protocol logging on the Sever, but haven't seen any errors to the addresses in question. So for further testing I have configured the Server to point to a Smart Host box running Trend Micro SPS. See what happens. I have also looked at our Firewall configuration. It looks fine. Take a look at MS article 895857. I still think it has something to with Exchange 2k3 only because my other connection running Exchange 5.5 IMC isn't having this problem. Not to mention that the issue didn't start happening until we upgraded. I've had this since about a year now. I >THINK< it was around the time I installed SP1 for Exchange, but really cannot corrolate that for fact. If you get the message, you can resend it 5 seconds later and it should go through 99% of the time. If you look at the SMTP Connector logs, you'll see that the mail servers called properly and then the receiving server gave the unable to relay message. My only guess is the way the sending server is trying to communicate is inducing some weird information that causes it to think you are trying to relay. I have >NEVER< gotten the message when I telnet and run the SMTP commands myself. All the usual things people tell me to check have provided absolutely nothing for resolution. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2005 2:29 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: SMTP errors Hi Since installing a SMTP connector on Exchange 2K3 SP1 I have been intermittently receiving the following error: 'You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator. <JAX-MBH-01.crowley.com #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for external address. These are addresses that have been working in the past. Message tracking shows a NDR created after smtp:started outbound transfer of message. Some times I can duplicate the error when I test. While other times it will work when I test it. I suspect that the problem is at my end, but don't know how to attack this problem. I have a Exchange 5.5 IMC I just tested one such address. It failed when I tested it. A telnet to the smtp server worked just fine. So I tested it again from Outlook and of coursed it worked. This is driving be crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My searches haven't turned up any thing that would seem to cause this problem.
