The entire recovery server process is fully documented in the MS DR whitepaper...

From what I read below, it looks like I don't need to name the server the same Netbios name? Do you know of any documents that detail the process of recovering just the individual mailboxes? ---------------------------------------------- Because the recovery server must be configured with the same computer name as the Exchange server (for full information store/directory service server recovery), the recovery server cannot remain online (no duplicate NetBIOS names allowed). Nor can identically named computers exist within a Windows NT Server domain. If you configure the recovery server with a different name, you will not be able to use it to restore the Exchange directory but you will be able to restore individual mailboxes easily although you will have to reconfigure Windows NT security for all objects. This can be a complex operation because it is manual. At the very least, prepare recovery equipment with copies of all required production code. Single mailbox recovery does not include restoring the Exchange directory, and Exchange requires only that the recovery server have the same site and organization name (not the same computer name) so you can keep a Windows NT Server-based computer online. If the recovery server is servicing only one site, Exchange can be up and running but not connected to the production site. ---------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: Ed Crowley [MVP] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 03, 2006 10:44 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange Recovery Server Build it on a separate network. We moved the MDBDATA and Translogs to a different location and let exchange start up and recreate the folders with a blank Information Store. We now have the MDBDATA and Translogs and would like to mount/repair these on a different server so we can try to recover the data in the Information Store We installed the same OS/Name (nt 4.0 sp6) on a different server with the same version of Exchange (5.5 sp4). The problem is that how do you give the recovery server the same name and have it on the network ? Exchange notifies us that to be installed we need to have the server connected to a domain. We still have the original server up with a blank Information Store on the network, we just need to bring up a different server to be able to attempt to recover the old information store. How do we get a Exchange Recovery Server up with not effecting the live server that is on the network ? What route do you recommend we take on installing a new server to mount/repair the information store? _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/read/?forum=exchange To subscribe: http://e-newsletters.internet.com/discussionlists.html/ To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
