On the IMF we have it set to....8 at the gateway (archive) and 6 at the client
if I recall correctly. That took some of our client machines from 200+ spam in
the Inbox a day to less than a dozen. Naturally they do see quite a few in
their Junk E-mail folder but that's o.k. Very, very few false positives. We
actually have considered tightening down to 7 and 5 but have not gone that far
just yet.
As for sender filtering, we don't do much with that. We do block blank sender
addresses (a checkbox on the sender filtering tab) and we have a couple of
obvious spammer domains ("supercheaprx4you.com" type stuff) listed but I'm
skeptical that it's all that effective so we haven't spent much time with those.
We also enabled connection filtering and put Spamhaus and ORDB in there. So
far we've had only one false positive (that we know of) from the connection
filter and that was somebody whose ISP had gotten themselves listed at
Spamhaus. It's been running for about 6 months like that and the client is
pretty pleased, especially considering it was free and pretty simple to
install. It's not perfect, they do still get a handful of spam a day, but it's
tolerable.
At some point if it stops being effective they'll probably take another look at
3rd party solutions.

I have been using IMF. But maybe I have not tightened up my settings enough. I
find the explanations at Microsoft confusing. What settings do you use on IMF
that give you good results? And sender-connection filtering?

What version of Exchange are you using? If it's 2003 have you already
installed IMF? It's not perfect, but I've gotten pretty good results with a
combination of IMF and sender/connection filtering considering the price.
Obviously this is anti-spam only and doesn't address your a/v needs.
If you haven't tried it yet I'd suggest giving it a go and see what the results
are. If they're good enough then you solved your spam issue for free. If not,
then you can still go get Brightmail or I Hate Spam or whatever 3rd party
product you want to get.

It is time for us to update our Exchange e-mail anti-virus protection and I
wondered if I should add the Symantec Brightmail to the mix as a combo. It
appears to be under $20 per user for the combo. We are a private, non-profit
and the bottom line is always important, but the top folks are sick and tired
of spam (aren't we all?) and I thought I could get this one by easily.
