I fought this problem for a long time. I tried every recommended fix, and none of them worked. It wasn't a DNS issue of any kind, or anything else anyone had said. The culprit was excessive queues.
First let me say I have E2003. For certain reasons, I cannot use recipient filtering to deny e-mails to users not in the directory. My spam product doesn't run at the gateway level either, so I can get hundreds of NDR's generated for invalid addresses. It can get so bad that I could have 700 queues, with only 1 NDR in each, or some with hundreds. Well, for some reason that MS couldn't give me a good answer for, having a large number of queues like that will cause delivery issues, and it causes the 5.7.1 Relay Denied. I was told this by an Exchange specifialist with MS PSS, and since taking measures to reduce my active number of queues (no it's generally < 200, I no longer get this problem. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michael Henry Sent: Tuesday, January 10, 2006 10:01 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Random Rejections Check to see if this is true for you. This solved my problem. Inbound e-mail came through the DNS MX record IP address. But Outbound e-mail went through an IP pool on the Firewall. So if a destination e-mail server did a reverse DNS on the Outbound pool IP, the name did not match. Sometimes giving you an IP Name forged error as well, besides the usual "Relay Denied" message. I had our ISP make a Reverse DNS entry for these IP addresses in the pool to match the MX record one as well. And all these relay messages have stopped. About 60% of the time I try to send email to my brother at his office I get this; "the following recipient(s) could not be reached: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 1/8/2006 1:17 PM There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <mail.familycareintl.org #5.5.0 smtp;553 sorry, relaying denied from your location [68.167.21.154] (#5.7.1)" Why does it sometimes work ??
