Well, I think I've got the MTA diagnostic logging cranked up to full and it's not showing anything. It stopped again today sometime after I'd rebooted the server. This time when I restarted it, it appeared to stay up and running.

I verified that all the mailboxes exist and no one has complained about any problems accessing their email, other than not being able to receive email on the DL. Also, on the question about expansion servers, it's set to "any server in site." Should I specify a server (we only have two)?
