I'm using Symantec Mail Security and I'm actually very pleased with it. The 4.6 build has been very stable. I haven't seen any hit on performance of the mail servers. I have it running on 2 back ends and 1 front end Exchange 2003 server. The front end scans SMTP in/out and the back ends do store scanning.
I'm doing some light content filtering with match lists, I don't use the spam features (they stink anyway). On average, per hour, my front end scans 9000 files vis VSAPI, 6000 messages via SMTP, and 14000 files vis SMTP. On average, per hour, my back end scans 60k e-mails via VSAPI, with peaks into the 150k range. Again, no performance impacts seen on any of the servers. I looked at Trend and Sybari recently, and I'd go with Trend if I was intersting in switching.
