You don't need to connect to the front-end server as the information you
need is replicated to all servers.  Is the public store on the front-end
server mounted?  If so, that's why you can't connect to it.  Connect to the
real public folder server and look for the replica information there.

I did just now. Under "First administrative group/folders" I right-clicked
"Public Folders" viewed the System folders, then selected "Connect To"
selected the front-end server, and got the message "The requested name is
valid, but no data of the requested type was found."

And, the folders under the front-end server's public folder tree are there,
but empty.

I wonder why I still can't delete the store!
