Likely the CA was only set to grab recipients or a separate container in 5.5 was created for DL's and the CA wasn't pointed at it for replication.
The should only become security groups if the DL's are used to set permissions to something like a mailbox or public folder. I think last time I saw a migration, the distribution lists did not come across into AD, and they all had to be re-created.. are these meant to come across with ADC?
