I know that it does not do historical.. it only does Dialtone, I guess I did
not explain right. Your product does cache the email on your server, and then
load up the server at the client when it comes back on line, so that users do
not miss anything in their client. Right?

I cannot wiat for some traiing when you are up here..

Guess I need to bring Kevin up to speed on our current EMS offering
(which does now offer per user historical e-mail) while I'm in Seattle
next month. On the plus side, since we do replication per user, we don't
have to worry nearly as much about latency nor do we have to worry about
replicating data for 'non-critical' users by replicating an entire
database.

EMS does not replicate your data, what they does is hold your mail for
you, and allow you to have Dialtone in the event of sever or site loss,
by giving you an OWA like site that all of your users can go to for
email.

If you have 4GB mail boxes then I would bet that you have big email
stores, and lots of daily flow, meaning that you are going to need 10MB
or larger pipes to get any value out of a replication method. Those
pipes will need to have less then 100MS latency to be fully compliant
with most venders replication offerings. Those pipes are very expensive,
will you ever see an ROI on that? What is down time worth to your
company?

EMS is cheap compared to that, and allows your users to keep sending and
receiving email when things down. Replication, right now, is expensive
when done right.

Are you also planning on replicating AD, and the network, will the other
site be able to afford the added user load in the event of a failure?
<insert lots more questions>

I personally don?t like offsite replication and do my best to talk
people out of it. That being said I have worked a number of projects
where I implemented it for customers, the team I now work on at
Microsoft is working on the asynchronous replication technology that
will be part of the next version of Exchange. In the right situation,
properly justified it is a great thing. That situation is hard to come
by, most people think that they need offsite replication but in reality
they don?t need that at all, it just sounds cool.

That is why I asked why.

My management insists users get as big a mail box as they want. Some
exceed 4 GB!

Can EMS be used in a way that's affordable in my envirnment?

I was of course making up that statistic on the fly based on my
personally opinion. If you want to say more then that I would support a
higher number like 99%.

I'd say more than 90%, but I'm a little biased. <gd&r>

I would say that EMS should be sufficient for about 90% of the
situations where an asynchronous replication solution, like doubletake,
is considered.

We use Double Take and it's worked great. It's passed our DR audits in
demonstrations and we've failed over once. This was in the 5.5 world.
I'm just finishing up configuring our 2003 world and it seems like it'll
work just as well, though I haven't tested it yet. We're also going to a
third party off site solution from MessageOne called EMS so that we have
all of our bases covered. I've also tested it with SQL and our DBA was
impressed. We also use log shipping for SQL just incase.

Cheers,
Tony

We need to replicate (and make Highly Available) two exchange 2003
servers to two other DR servers. We are considering Legato Autostart or
Doubletake.
Doubletake is coming it at much less money. Wondering what we would not
get with double take. We ultimately want to use those same DR servers
for SQL DR purposes. Legato seems to be more of an Enterprise product.

TIA
