There's nothing inherent in clustering which protects against any number of ills which can (and do) impact availability. A corrupt Exchange database is just as catastrophic to availability on a cluster as it is to a stand-alone server. A RAID array tanking is as well. I've seen both (as a high availability service provider) take a clustered Exchange server below 4 9s of availability in production environments where the operations folks were top notch.
