In Exchange 5.5 you can set up a link monitor of the NDR type and
periodically send a message to one of many Internet "bounce" addresses.  I'm
disappointed that this function didn't make it in Exchange 200x.

Well, at least in EX 5.5, you can look at the queue and see in Exchange
Admin.
