Don't use a software mirror. Invest in a RAID controller and use hardware mirroring.

I have been doing just that on a new server and I think I sense a slowness. It's a good fast Xeon dual processor server with 4 gigs of RAM. Should I de-couple the mirror? I don't know that in reality it offers me that much security. If one HD goes nuts, they both would be nuts, right?
