Thanks for the advice. I made an ExMerge backup and it threw up some
errors like this:

Error copying message with subject ?SUBJECT? (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=328642

So I am not confident that I have made a good ExMerge. I have already
run ESEUTIL in /p then /d then ISINTEG last night. When I followed that
with a backup the ESE 474 errors came backup and the backup failed.

I have just run the Dell Diagnostics on the drives from their boot CD
and it came up clean. If the disks (or disk subsystem) is dodgy then why
does the mirror not fail and general disk errors occur?

Subject: RE: ESE event 474 - not hard disk?

Ian,

Make backup with exmerge and run isinteg. If it does not solve the
problem run eseutil repair.
If this does not solve your problem rehome databases on another disk,
format the disk and move databases back. If this does not solve the
problem change the disk or rehome the server.

Subject: ESE event 474 - not hard disk?

We have an SBS2003 server running on 2x 160GB SATA drives with Windows
Software RAID1. The server is about 3 months old. Three partitions:

C: system
D: data
E: empty/backup

Exchange DB are on D and logs in default location on C.

The server was built using 'Swing Migration' method and the Exchange DB
was forklifted from the original server to the new server. Both servers
have the same name and AD was migrated.

Since the forklift I have been having these events appear:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Logging/Recovery
Event ID: 474
Date: 22/03/2006
Time: 03:49:46
User: N/A
Computer: SBS2003
Description:
Information Store (5664) First Storage Group: The database page read
from the file "D:\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\pub1.edb" at offset 4296704
(0x0000000000419000) (database page 1048 (0x418)) for 4096 (0x00001000)
bytes failed verification due to a page checksum mismatch. The expected
checksum was 7987537296697916479 (0x6ed96ed9ffdcfc3f) and the actual
checksum was 7944752443766530058 (0x6e416e41271ee00a). The read
operation will fail with error -1018 (0xfffffc06). If this condition
persists then please restore the database from a previous backup. This
problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware
vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.

Mainly they appear at backup (and the backup fails on Exchange) but also
during the day.

I am troubleshooting this with MS PSS (Indian Division) and they are not
much help.

I have run chkdsk /f on Drive D and it comes up clean.

I know the event points at hardware being the issue but I am not
convinced because it sits on software RAID so I was expecting that if
the disks are causing issues for there to be lots of errors / events
from RAID? There are none that I can see. In Disk Manager all disks are
listed as 'Healthy'.

Any ideas? Anyone seen this before?
