Disabling or removing the antivirus product is usually the first thing I recommend.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear enough that the problems are quite resolved. I was just offering a cautionary tale that when bizarre things start happening to your email, your first suspect should be the AV. It was because of other people posting similar similar situations on this list that I was able to quickly resolve the problems. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hawkins, Geni P" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Exchange Discussions" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 09, 2006 9:33 AM Subject: RE: 2 symptoms - 2 cures You're not running file-level antivirus scans against the directories that contain your Exchange databases, I hope. If you are, I'd highly recommend that you remove that, and reinstall a product specifically for Exchange antivirus, like Mcafee Groupshield. Don't scan your databases with file-level antivirus - it can do Very Bad Things. No SMTP coming in at all. Only restarting the server, usually with the power button <shudder> would temporarily unclog them. Symptom 2: SMTP server would put up to 100 identical copies of each message in the mailbox. Stopping the SMTP server was the only quick fix. These symptoms occurred on two totally separate servers, 1 on my production server, and 2 on my home/lab server. The culprit in both cases turned out to be Symantec Mail Security. Symptom 1 was resolved by installing a version upgrade of SMS. I suspect that uninstalling and reinstalling the incumbent version would have had the same effect. Symptom 2 was cured by completely removing the Symantec products and replacing them with another AV. I'm trying AVG. Anybody have experience with their Exchange product? _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/read/?forum=exchange To subscribe: http://e-newsletters.internet.com/discussionlists.html/ To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
