Of course, the perf requirements for a properly configured FE server are
minimal. I don't think we're saying it won't work, just don't expect to
call MS for help on it (yet). I'm sure that supportability will change
in the near future but that's been covered in other threads already.

But this would be one of those perfect situations. There's no store on
the FE, which is the primary reason it's supportability is complicated.
It won't require gobs of RAM or gobs of disk IOs like the BE server
does.

I completely agree with Joe, and on that note, Exchange on a VM is
supported only in very specific circumstances.

Disclaimer: I am not an authorized Microsoft Rep... You should really
be speaking to Microsoft about all licensing questions...

With that out of the way...

The license to run multiple virtual instances of Windows Server 2003 R2
on a single piece of hardware is ONLY extended to the Enterprise edition
of Windows Server. Unless Microsoft has reconsidered this point in the
past few months, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition does not enjoy
this privilege.

Next... Microsoft does not support running ISA server on a virtual
machine. Not that you couldn't get it to work (many people, myself
included (for testing & learning), have done it), but it's not a
supported config from Microsoft. Just something to be aware of going
in... http://www.support.microsoft.com/kb/897614

Finally... It is not a good idea to run other software on your
firewall. That includes OWA/Exchange on ISA. ISA is a FIREWALL and
should be thought of as a security appliance. As a such, why do you
think it would be a good idea to run other software on it? The ISA
server box is not the place to install Exchange (FE or BE).

Importance: Low

I agree with the exchange license but understood that the w2k3 R2
license allowed 5 vituals on the same license so you could have exchange
and ISA on the same box but different virtuals.

No. You need a separate license for Exchange for every running instance
of Exchange, whether virtual or not.

Is it true that if you use w2k3 R2 you can put all of these on one
server as virtuals and one license?

Yes. I don't know if you will find Exchange on an ISA Server as a common
configuration out there. Not saying it can't be done (I wonder if that's
supported?), but it seems like it would add a great deal of complexity
to run it on what is effectively a firewall. If you can't get a 3rd
server for whatever reason, you would probably be better served just
doing the secure publishing through ISA to your single back-end server.
