It can work at different varying levels of interception giving different
options, tagging the mail and dumping the mail with a rejection message
or attempt to bounce (never ideal to bounce as you end up with the
problem of dealing with triple bounces) are just two options, it can
filter directly to Junk folders but you need to use maildir and IMAP
mailboxes which would void having Exchange.

It is best used in conjunction with postfix/amavisd-new in my
experience, these three websites have info on all of the products I have
mentioned :-

http://www.postfix.org
http://spamassassin.apache.org/
http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/

There are web front ends for amavis which allow you to setup access for
people to retrieve there own spam but I have not used this myself.

To set this up will require plenty of unix knowledge and some lengthy
initial configuration, but it is well worth it in the end, in my
opinion.

For out of the box ease of use I would recommended Mail Sweeper but this
obviously costs money.

  Hi Neil,

How does SpamAssassin work with the individual mailboxes? Does it
just tag a suspected Spam Email as Spam then you setup a rule in outlook
to move the message , or does it actually move/deletes the message
before it gets to the inbox?

A unix based front end with spamassassin is good, you mention tech
support so if a work out of the box with no requirements for some level
of techno savvy configuration then it is probably not your best choice,
but it is a very good spam filter.

Something that may be more useful for you is to look into greylisting
and SMTP banner delaying, greylisting says go away and come back later
to the first attempt of mail delivery then allows it in the second
attempt, SMTP banner delay just sets a delay before giving the 220 ready
for mail banner.

Using both of these methods stops spammers who are looking for a quick
delivery and most wont come back to attempt a second delivery, stopping
the mail coming into your server in the first place.

Subject: any anti spam recommendations

Hello, We are running Exchange 2003 with a pair of front end GFI Anti
virus/Anti Spam servers acting as SMTP relays. The GFI products really
are not enterprise grade. They are difficult to manage and have horrible
tech support. Furthermore, they do not perform as advertised. We are
looking for something much better. So far, we have looked at BrightMail
(seems to now be called SMTP Ver. 5) and the MacAfee appliance (Secure
Internet Gateway). We are looking for something that does not require
constant tweaking and maintenance; something that would give us much
better anti spam results. Our mail volume is anywhere from 500,000 to 1
million emails per day, of course 98% of which is----yes you guessed it
SPAM!

Any feedback from the list would be greatly appreciated.
