The limit is just over 16,000, in any one folder, I believe, however it's a generally accepted guideline that you should keep it under 1,000 items in any folder because Outlook will take an increasingly long time to render the view of the folder as the number increases. Simply create some other folders and sort messages into them if they can't be deleted.
