That would be my thinking too, which is why I was surprised that my clients showed up as zeros. The blogger too is a bit tentative about what 0 means. My guess is that Exchange pops a goose egg whenever it's not sure.

Wouldn't pre-Outlook 2003 clients be 1 by default since cached mode was
introduced in Outlook 2003?

According to the MS Exchange Blog
(http://www.typepad.com/t/trackback/208/1181173), this is how the Client
Mode values stack up:

0 = 'unknown' and seems to indicate pre-Outlook 2003 (version 11) clients.
1 = Online
2 = Cached mode

That explains why I was seeing 0 for Online clients.

Yup, right you are -- thank you. But, and I've only had a chance to
look at a very small lab store with few clients none of whom are
online, and they all show a value of 0. I'll check the production
store tomorrow.

You can tell if the current client connection for users is in cached
mode or not (Exchange 2003 SP2) by looking at the Logons for the
store. The Client Mode row is 1 for online and 2 for cached.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/e2k3
/e2k3/_wmiref_cl_Exchange_Logon.asp I believe it should be possible
to write a (Don't worry, be) MAPI application to query for this
information.

Also, just as an FYI, you can force this on a user or server level:

Is there any way to tell from the server side which clients are on
Cache mode and which aren't?
