Normally Yes - However the alternative is to just tell the clients the username/password (which is shared) and depend on them to type it correctly. The SMTP account is not a domain or even a computer account, it is for SMTP access only; the VMs that the clients login to have only a limited set of applications and no way for the clients to add more; and the SMTP server is configured to only allow traffic from a limited set of IPs. I'm not too concerned about the security of this particular account - in fact I would not require a password if my SMTP server would allow it.

Wouldn't using a plain-text password in a text file constitute an enormous security breach? We have a number of clients that use Outlook to send email through an SMTP server rather than through Exchange. Currently, when we add a new client we can specify the username needed to connect to the SMTP server via an Outlook .prf file. However, I haven't found a property that lets me set the password as well. Is this possible?
