Thanks for the reply - I've been refreshing my memory on the white
papers.

One thing that I did misunderstand was Administrative Groups. I thought
you could move servers between them once you were in Native Mode but it
appears not.

In our situation (2 servers, dedicated circuit between sites) I'm not
clear why we'd want to retain 2 administrative groups (we do all the
admin it's just a leftover from the 5.5 days and slow WAN links).

To get rid of their admin group I'd have to build a swing server and do
the migration to that before going native, bringing up the new box and
moving them onto that.

Cheers,
Paul

Subject: RE: Installing Exchange 2003 and Migration Questions

On the shutdown issue, I generally find it beneficial to use a command
prompt to shut down Exchange services on ANY Exchange server first.
Depending on how many transactions there are to commit, it can take an
hour (or more!) for the services to shut down if you simply use the
Start, Shutdown. (I once saw a perfectly normal shutdown of a server
that'd been running for quite some time take 2-1/2 hours. People were
freaking.) But if you do a net stop msexchangesa (which will also shut
down the stores and the rest of the services), I find it very rarely
takes more than 5-10 minutes to complete a normal shutdown.

Adding the 2003 server and moving the mailboxes is just that simple.
The only problems I ran into the last time I decommissioned a 5.5 server
(some years back, I'll admit) were with mailboxes that were open, or
mailboxes that were excessively large. Any that are much more than a
gig in size, you might want to encourage the user to pare them down
before you move them.  Do the mailbox moves from the destination server;
that speeds things up quite a bit over using a workstation with Exchange
tools.

There are quite a number of whitepapers on the proper way to
decommission 5.5 servers, and the instructions in them seem to work
quite well. I don't have a link handy, but I imagine our friend Google
does.

Subject: Installing Exchange 2003 and Migration Questions

I have a server to configure for a remote office. The rights and wrongs
of a local server vs. cached mode to one side, it's sat in our workshop
and I need to start building it up tomorrow :-)

It needs to be a Domain Controller (and presumably a Global Catalogue?)
through the fact that it authenticates users in that AD site.

I've done some digging and the issues I can find are:

Shutdown can take a long time if you don't stop the SA (and therefore
Exchange services) first.
You can't demote the DC back to a member server Exchange will only use
that DC/GC server.

Their existing server is 5.5 and is part of our Exchange Organization
but is in its own Site.

We went to 2003 at our site some time back, so the ADC has been running
since and agreements are in place to/from their existing server.

My understanding is that I can "simply" join the new 2003 box to their
Exchange site, move all the mailboxes and Public Folders, do the steps
to remove the 5.5 directory replication and site connectors and remove
the 5.5 box and the ADC (not too sure what order those last 2 are done
in?), then I can go native and move their new server into our
Administrative Group?

Finally, since our Administrative Group is called "Our Site Name", I'd
like to have a new one called "Default Administrative Group" (or
whatever) - is there any more to it than creating a new AG and moving
both servers into it?

It's been a few years since I've had to actually install/build an
Exchange box so I'd like a bit of a sanity check please.

Thanks in advance,
Paul
