In my own personal experience, I have run two McAfee products on Exchange 2010 servers:
1. Standard McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 2. McAfee Security for Microsoft Exchange 8 *McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise* This is the normal McAfee virus scan that many servers and workstations run to do basic virus scanning/protection at the OS level. *This product doesn't do virus scanning of email traffic*. Scour McAfee's hodgepodge of a site for the exclusions list and exclude what it says for Exchange servers. This works well and I've never had a problem after excluding the recommended files and paths https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB51471 *McAfee Security for Microsoft Exchange 8* This is a very robust product. It has a lot of bells and whistles for sure, including anti-SPAM. As far as scanning live email traffic, called "on-access" by McAfee, it has 3 main modes: VSAPI, Background and Transport. Background and Transport have always worked well for me, never had any problems. VSAPI has caused headaches in the past with causing Outlook 2010 clients to "hang". By McAfee's description, VSAPI: "Scans for threats when an email is accessed by the end-user using an email client such as Outlook." I've had to turn it off in many sites. This could be an issue with my setup or McAfee in general, but I didn't spend much time fixing it because, A.) all clients run McAfee Virus Scan enterprise which already includes an Outlook plug-in to scan email they open, B.) there are perimeter devices that scan for malware and SPAM, C.) we have the transport and background scanners turned on in McAfee Security for MS Exchange 8, and D.) I am migrating that customer to Exchange 2013 which has its own built-in malware scanning. I think McAfee has a new product out now for email servers, but I have no experience with it yet. https://kc.mcafee.com/resources/sites/MCAFEE/content/live/PRODUCT_DOCUMENTATION/24000/PD24248/en_US/msme_800_pg_00_en-us.pdf I have been using McAfee products at customer sites for 5 years now and haven't had too many issues with them as long as they are configured properly. All AV has its headaches to be honest. Hope this helps.
