Greetings,
Checking my notes, I see I never responded on resolution - sorry.

I made the changes per the TIDs I noted in the post, and now all calendar items
are preserved moving forward.

Thanks for your help.

Dana

Subject: [Exchange] RE: Calendar and Tasks Retention - changed in SP2 U4

MS did not set the default to zero because there were SO MANY complaints about
this not working as it had before, with MRM 1.0 (Exchange 2007), and Exchange
2000/2003 mailbox policies. What you saw in early Exchange 2010 was an
aberration.

Subject: [Exchange] Calendar and Tasks Retention - changed in SP2 U4

Greetings,

Just a heads up in case anyone runs into this.
Exchange 2010 SP3 U3
Outlook 2013 clients

History:
When we migrated to Exchange 2010 in June 2010, we set 270 day retention tags
for all folders in user mailboxes.
At the time, we understood that Calendar and Tasks were not subject to
retention per MS design and that is what we wanted.

In February 2014, we upgraded from Exchange 2010 SP2 u3 to Exchange 2010 SP3 u3
to remain within the MS support matrix.

Recently, I noticed user calendar items appear to be deleting after 270 days so
did some more digging and found:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/08/14/calendar-and-tasks-retention-tag-support-in-exchange-2010-sp2-ru4.aspx.
NOTE:
In February 2014, We went directly from Exchange 2010 SP2 u3 to Exchange 2010
SP3 u3, so had never installed Exchange 2010 SP2 u4.

>From my read of the link above, Exchange 2010 SP2 u4 (and all later) changed
>the default behavior of mailboxes under the 270 day retention to INCLUDE
>Calendar and Tasks and that is why older than 270 days are now missing from
>all calendars.

Before You Deploy Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4

Support for Calendar and Tasks in Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4 means you'll need to
treat this update rollup differently. If you don't use Retention Policies or if
you don't mind Calendar and Tasks items being moved to archive or deleted
automatically based on the DPT settings, you can skip the rest of this post.

However, if you are concerned about the effects of this new functionality will
have on your calendar and task items, you can implement the following temporary
workarounds:

If you don't want Calendar and Tasks items to ever expire, you can disable the
functionality that is included in Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4. Add the following
registry key to your Mailbox servers:
Path:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMailboxAssistants\Parameters
Name: ELCAssistantCalendarTaskRetentionEnabled
Type: DWORD
Value: 0 = Do not process Calendar and Task folders
Value: 1 = Process (default with RU4)

If you want Calendar and Tasks folders to expire at a different interval than
DPTs, you can follow the following steps:
1.Place all mailboxes on Retention Hold
2.Apply Exchange 2010 SP2 RU4 to your Mailbox servers.
3.Create RPTs for Calendar and Tasks folders with the desired retention
settings.
4.Inform users about the change.
5.When ready, remove the retention hold from mailboxes.

Agreed we and our consultant missed this so stuck with the outcome - and many
will not be happy once I report back.
Unfortunate that MS did not set the DEFAULT value to 0, but maybe there was a
reason.

I will now go back and review the registry key method to at least get us back
to full Calendar and Tasks unlimited retention (hoping we don't have to change
any RPTs to complete this).

Just wondering if anyone has run into this or has any newer information for
discussion.

Thanks for your help.
Dana
