Microsoft's recommendation comes from the way they roll-out nodes in the 
service.

It certainly makes sense "at scale", but not necessarily for the average 
on-premises company. As with many things Exchange, you evaluate what works best 
for you...

Personally I prefer to break out the CAS role onto standalone boxen (or VMs). 
Separation of church and state, I mean data and connectivity.

I was talking to a friend who had been advised from Microsoft to put CAS and 
Mailbox role on the same 2013 server that is in a DAG with about 1000 
mailboxes, interesting to hear if anyone else has gone this way or your 
thoughts?
