Unless I'm misunderstanding the question, you can filter all of the DLs in the Outlook GAL by clicking on the drop down under Address Book and then select All Distribution Lists. Likewise, you can use this to filter for Mailbox users as well as Contacts.

In the past, some places I have worked have put an ! or _ in front of DL's so they sorted separately from Mailboxes and in A - Z order. Do you still do that? Anything better come along with 2010/2013? I am also looking at separate GAL's, but have not done that since 5.5 so not sure if that is still "best practices".
