Got it mostly figured out. For some reason, the backup target was a drive local to the machine - it's a VM, and it had a 200gb disk tacked onto it to hold the backups.
When I looked, it had only 18gb free, so it looks as if the backup job was overrunning the disk. I had been under the impression that the backup was going to a share on a file server, and indeed when I checked the share, the last backup there was from the 28th. So, I have a bit more work to do to figure this out, but the backups last night seem to have completed, though they didn't end up on the file server share as expected, so I'm going to see if I can put things back the way they should be.
