It's not in 821; it's in 822.  Superseded by 2821 and 2822 a few months
ago.  Seems they're rather fond of the word "SHOULD" in that RFC.  Have
fun deciding whether they're valid; this seems to be one of those things
that's left to the discretion of the implementor.

        does anyone know where I can get a list of all valid SMTP
characters? I have checked RFC821 and there seems to be info regarding
length of username and domain name etc, but not specific character
lists.
