Absolutely terrible. Heartfelt sympathy to everyone involved or close.
However I have to agree with Ben. In the UK we have been living with
terrorism for the last 30 years and while the terrorists are funded and
supplied with arms and bomb making equipment no amount of posturing will
stop them, especially when they are prepared to die for their cause.
Fortunately, for us in the UK the IRA aren't that fundamentalist (yet).
When someone can pack an H bomb in a suitcase and is happy to go up with it,
no high tech star wars defense system is going to prevent a human tragedy.
Somehow we have to all work out how to live together. We can only do that by
talking.

Speaking for myself, the shock does not come from the discovery of the
vulnerability of any large metro area, but just from that it is actually
happening.
I know that at any time I can be involved in a serious vehicle accident.
That doesn't mean I'm not upset when it happens, and this morning's event
are orders of magnitude greater than a car wreck.

I hate to be callous, but the only thing that has changed is public
perception.
People have been pointing out how vulnerable a crowded city is to any kind
of attack or disaster for decades.
People have been pointing out how vulnerable the USA is to terrorist
attack for at least twenty years.
No analyst in this field would be surprised that this occurred.
