We tried both routing through DNS and a smart relay (a Unix mailer).
As I said, if I supply the mail via SMTP (eg Outlook Express), it
works. Outlook won't...

Not having an Outlook computer here, I can just quote from memory. We
install default Outlook from Office 97 Pro CD, just adding the
Exchange service and configuring it to the NetBIOS name of mentionned
server.
